Why We Built Yomita

The screen is not the world

Most AI is built for your screen time. We think the screen is only a window onto the world, not the world itself. Yomita exists to help you look up, go out, travel, and be all the way present when something happens — and then to stay out of the way.

Most AI is built for your screen time. More sessions, longer sessions, another notification, another reason to open the app. The metric is attention, and the product follows the metric. That is not villainy. It is what happens when the thing you can count quietly stands in for the thing you meant.

We think the screen is not the world.

It is a window onto it. Often a very good one. But nothing that has ever mattered to you actually happened there. It happened at a table in a city where you did not speak the language. On a street you turned down by mistake and were glad you did. In a room full of people talking fast, where you wanted to say the thing you were thinking while it was still worth saying.

Go out

You can see anywhere from your sofa now, in better resolution than the people who live there get. The pictures are extraordinary and they are not the thing.

The thing is the market at seven in the morning. The argument about the bill. The man who insists on walking you to the corner because pointing was not enough. The half hour with a stranger you will still be describing to people in ten years. None of that arrives through a feed. You have to be standing there.

The screen and the world
The screen is a window onto the world. It is not the world.

And most of what keeps people from standing there is not money or time. It is friction — the small, constant fear of not understanding, of being stuck, of being the one holding up the line. That friction is solvable. It is, honestly, the most worthwhile thing we could point this technology at.

Catch the moment

The moments that need help are the ones that do not wait.

Somebody says something, and there is a second, maybe two, before the moment closes. A menu you cannot read while the waiter stands over you. A question you want to ask the guide before the group moves on. Help that arrives a minute later is not help. It is a transcript.

So the bar is not how good the answer is. It is whether the answer arrived in time to change what happened next — and whether it then got out of the way.

What we want Yomita to be

Something you barely notice using.

If we do this well you will not think about us much. You will think about the dinner, the trip, the person across the table. You will use it less in a good month than in a bad one, and that is fine. Plenty of things worth keeping are used rarely.

We are not trying to be where you spend your life. We are trying to give you more life to spend somewhere else.

Why we exist

To help you go out. To travel, get lost, eat the thing you cannot pronounce, talk to the people you would otherwise walk past, and be all the way present while it is happening rather than half present and filming it.

That is the goal. That is the whole company.

If you want to know whether we got it right, do not look at how long you spent in the app. Look at how the evening went.

Questions

What does Yomita build?
Tools for the moments you look up from a screen rather than the ones you spend staring at it. Everything we make is judged by one question: did it help you in the room, and then leave you alone?
What does success look like for Yomita?
You putting the phone down. If something we make is doing its job you forget it is running, and what you remember afterwards is the evening rather than the app.
